In the midst of Coronavirus, there are several sources of conflicting advice that we are all coming across. Do this, not that, this medicine might work, wear this mask, wash your hands, etc. However, the old adage “prevention is better than cure” has never been more relevant. You might not realize just how much of an impact certain foods and drinks can have and lead to low immunity.
Your first line of defense is to choose a healthy lifestyle. Following general good-health guidelines is the single best step you can take towards naturally keeping your low immunity strong and healthy. Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from environmental assaults and bolstered by healthy-living strategies. The single enduring wisdom we all need to remember in these times is: to stay well-nourished, to sleep well, and to be well hydrated. It’s three simple things, but it’s hard to do as the temptation to eat junk food, be anxious, and not sleep well is ever-present.

He says “Your immune system is your last line of defense, and that is where you should be putting a tonne of effort”. Makes sense right? He says “This is not the time for preservatives, and additives and things you can’t even pronounce. This is not the time to stress your immune system”. And we couldn’t agree more, this is the time to Say No to Junk. The most responsible thing we could do for public safety is to reduce our own risk of falling sick, with factors that we can still control.
We’ve been looking at videos on the internet and feeling so inspired by all the home cooking we see! One thought: it is now time to reduce the nutrient-deficient foods in our day to day diet, such as frying our food or eating Maida. This may score high on the taste section, and it will even fill our stomach up. But it’s really empty calories stripped of all the essential nutrients, minerals, and proteins that our body desperately needs.
Last week someone asked us on our Instagram page “Why is Maida bad? So many Europeans eat it”. Fair question and I wanted to address that today. The typical Mediterranean diet is not tilted towards the overconsumption of Maida. They eat fresh vegetables which are not overcooked and fried, good protein from fish and lean meat and lots of good fats. The difference is always in the balance of our diet. Overconsumption of Maida makes us susceptible to an increase in blood sugar levels. Eating too much Maida can also stress our adrenal glands, which weakens the body’s immunity. Maida is also acidic, with low mineral content (compared to other whole grains). And this generates acidity and chronic inflammation.
We also know that people who have diabetes and blood pressure are particularly susceptible to Coronavirus. Fried food can have several negative health effects, and puts us at risk of developing diseases like diabetes, obesity, blood pressure, and cardiac disease. Therefore it’s best to limit our intake of such food, and teach our children to enjoy fresh, healthy home-cooked food. No time like today to embrace new and better habits!
